Pingyao Ancient City Pingyao Ancient City, located in central Shanxi Province, has over 2,800 years of history and remains one of the best-preserved ancient cities in China. With its city walls, old streets, temples, residences, and banks, it reflects the social and economic life of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1986, Pingyao was named a Famous Historic and Cultural City of China. In 1997, it was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, along with Shuanglin Monastery and Zhenguo Temple. UNESCO praised it as an outstanding example of a traditional Han Chinese city.
