This icon is rich in symbolic meaning and is now enshrined in St. Alphonsus Liguori Church in Rome. The symbolic meaning of the icon: The terrified Jesus: In the painting, the infant Jesus sees the instruments of crucifixion (cross, spear, and sponge) held by the angels and runs to his mother in fear, even losing a sandal. This symbolizes Jesus's human side and teaches believers that in times of suffering and fear, they should turn to the Virgin Mary for comfort, just as Jesus did. The Hand of Eternal Support: Our Lady gazes tenderly upon the faithful, her hands not grasping Jesus but open, inviting all to place their hands in hers in times of difficulty, seeking her eternal help. On May 5, 1866, Pope Pius IX granted this icon the title "Nostra Mater de Perpetuo Succursu" (Our Lady of Eternal Support) in the Apostolic Coronation and permitted its legal coronation by the Church. The coronation was conducted on June 23, 1867, presided over by Cardinal Ruggero Luigi Emidio Antici Mattei, Latin Patriarch of Constantinople. The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer is the custodian of this icon. In Eastern Orthodox tradition, this icon is also known as "Our Lady of the Passion" (Greek: Παναγία του Πάθους). Thanks to the vigorous promotion by Redeemer priests, this icon is widely revered by Catholics in both the West and the East. Every year before the feast day on June 27th, the faithful observe a novena.
