Principles For a Great Lead Leg in Hurdles
Lead Leg Principles 1. Knee Leads into Hurdle 1st The lead leg should initiate from the knee drive, not a reach with the foot. Cue: “Lead With the knee” Prevents overreaching and keeps the hips tall and moving forward. 2. Dorsiflexed, Active Foot Toe up, ankle locked as the foot attacks the hurdle. Creates a faster snap-down and reduces wasted time in the air. Passive feet = slow ground contact after the hurdle. 3. Drive-Down Under the Hip The lead leg must re-cover aggressively and land under the center of mass. Think down and back, not out in front. This preserves speed and sets up an efficient trail leg recovery. How do you teach the lead leg?
