Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who was at the center of a gender controversy at the Paris Olympics, received a hero’s welcome upon her return home from the 2024 Games. Khelif, 25, claimed victory in the women’s 66kg event, defeating China’s Yang Liu in the final by unanimous decision. However, Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting, who won gold in the women’s 57kg category, faced intense scrutiny over their eligibility to compete. Both fighters had been disqualified by the IBA from the 2023 World Championships after failing a gender test, but they maintained that they were born female.
