In the early 1900s, tuberculosis, also known as the white plague, was killing hundreds of people across the United States. The highly contagious disease, which usually affected the lungs of its host, seemed to be spreading rapidly throughout the country and was the leading cause of death in the country at the time. Louisville, Kentucky, was hit especially hard by the plague, as the wetlands along the Ohio River seemed to allow the bacteria to spread more easily. The city had the highest tuberculosis death rate in the country in 1900.
