It was the first home console game in 11 years, and fans were excited about it, especially since it was coming up close to the 40th anniversary of Macross. Unfortunately, reviews for the game immediately after release were very poor, with many one-star reviews on Amazon. Reviews on Steam were mixed, and it still has a low rating today.
