Falling Down - 10 things you [probably] didn't know. Falling Down tells the story of William Forster (Douglas), a US Department of Defense employee, who is having the worst day of his life. A middle-class American, with few moments of joy and many bad days, which he tries to cope with as best he can...at least that's what he's thought his whole life. William is just trying to get to his daughter's birthday party, but every obstacle in the world is getting in his way. Along the way, William begins to succumb to the insanity of a big city that doesn't care about him. At the same time, he begins to realize that little by little he can do something about it, even if it's through violence. Forster is definitely ready to fight back. Parallel to William's story is that of a man about to retire, Prendergast, played by Robert Duvall. He is retiring because of his wife and is clearly unhappy about it. The film then shifts to a cat-and-mouse chase, with Duval's detective hot on the trail of the unhinged Douglas. Falling Down features a complete and in-depth character study, both in the figures of Foster (Michael Douglas) and Prendergast (Robert Duval), both out of place in their time and location. Joel Schumacher's (Flatliners, The Lost Boys, A Time to Kill, The Client, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin) assured direction allows the actors to showcase their talent.
