Drugs. Gangs. Prison. Homelessness. Death. Everything the United States promised collapsed for us. Are we typical? Is there some defect in our family? Was it the city, our surroundings? I am searching for answers, and I understand they might not be comfortable. So, I reached out to longtime family friend Stalker Loko, a rapper with over a million views. He and his family are National City royalty, and he knows my oldest brother well. On cold Winter Friday in 2023, I sat down with two OTNC veterans, two men who’ve been friends for nearly three decades. It took that long for them to run their respective ways, crisscrossing at various points, and then reconnecting at a very different time ... ready to get real, ready to reflect, ready to say the hard parts out loud.
