Having become a literary event over a decade ago, Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez, whose work "The Sound of Things Falling," "The Informants," and "The Shape of Ruins," returns to bookstores with "Felice's Names" (Editorial Alfaguara), the story and the multifaceted life of the sculptor Feliza Bursztyn, a whirlwind of freedom at a time when large-scale art was a man's thing and experiencing love outside the confines of marriage was, of course, severely censured by society. She died at the age of 48, of a heart attack, right before the eyes of Gabriel García Márquez, in a Russian restaurant in Paris. "She died of sadness," the author of "One Hundred Years of Solitude" wrote days later. Years later, strolling through Paris, Juan Gabriel Vásquez read that article. And he couldn't stop wondering why that woman of impossible sculptures would have died of sadness.
