Hmong life story .Long ago, among the Hmong people, when someone died, their spirit would sometimes turn into a tiger. These spirit-tigers roamed the forests and mountains. One day, a dark female spirit — a poj ntxoog — began to control these spirit-tigers. She led them back to the villages of the living. When night fell, the tigers would come quietly through the forest paths, waiting for people who were still alive. Many Hmong villagers started disappearing — one after another. Some were found torn apart by tigers, and others were never seen again. The elders said it was because the poj ntxoog was calling the souls of the dead back, turning them into tigers to hunt the living. Because of this, the Hmong lived in great fear. They made sacrifices, burned incense, and called shamans to protect their families. And to this day, some still say that when a tiger’s eyes glow deep in the night — it might not be a tiger at all, but the spirit of one who once lived among them.
