Drone Leba | Leba from a bird's eye view ▸ The town with the 13th-century origin, situated at the mouth of the Leba River, did not have good prospects from the very beginning. The forces of nature most opposed to the city. The open sea, attacking the southern shore, made it impossible to build a port. The river flooded over and over again, shifting its channel westward and endangering the existence of the settlement. The enemy of the inhabitants was the wandering sand from the dunes of the spit separating Łebsko Lake from the Baltic Sea - it was filling up farmlands, streets, and plunging houses. History was also not kind to Leba. At the time of its first location under Polish law, Leba probably belonged to one of the representatives of the Święc family, which at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries strengthened in this part of Pomerania. In 1309, Łeba and the entire Gdańsk Pomerania were conquered by the Teutonic Knights, in which the Święc family greatly helped them. Both of them commemorated themselves in the coat of arms of Leba. There is a fish-dog (or fish-animal) in it, which was the emblem of a noble family, and a cross - a sign of the Order of the hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and also a monastic state. A fish-animal, half a griffin and half a fish, in the heraldry of nobility is identical with the coat of arms of Pobędz. These elements are included in the seal of the city of Lebemunde - Łebo estuary, because that is how the city was originally called. The seal was made shortly after the location under the Lubeck law, which was bestowed on Leba in 1357 by the Gdańsk commander Wilhelm von Baldershaim. Used for centuries, it preserved the coat of arms of the city, although with time it completely lost its current meaning. The sovereignty of the Święc family expired, perhaps when the Teutonic Knights came, and they lost power over the mouth of the Łeba finally after the Thirteen Years' War. Later, the town shared the fate of the Lębork Land, which was a fief of the West Pomeranian dukes, and after the death of Bogusław X, it was briefly ruled by Polish kings, only to fall under the slavery of Brandenburg and its Prussian heirs in 1657. In the everyday life of many generations of Łeba inhabitants, the struggle with hostile nature came to the fore. Chronicles record huge floods in the years 1396, 1441, 1467 and 1497. On January 11, 1558, a powerful storm in the Baltic Sea caused a flood that caused such great damage that the inhabitants decided to build a new city in a place approximately 2 km to the southeast of the previous one. In 1570, the next sea attack forced the last inhabitants to move to the new Łeba, and the abandoned settlements were soon completely absorbed by the dune sand. In 1590, the church of St. Nicholas, who stood in the center of a medieval town, only a fragment of the wall of this building has survived. But even later, despite the distance, living with the sea was difficult. At the end of the 18th century, a plan was made to build a large port on Lake Łebsko, for this purpose a canal was dug through the spit. It turned out to be an unrealistic undertaking for those times, because on March 4, 1799 the sea waves completely destroyed the work, scattered the accumulated wood supplies, and threw ships ashore.
