Hands dirt-streaked and tired, we laid the stone, Built from the chaos, a space to call our own. Behind tangled trees, sunlight slipped and played, We carved out shelter where the wild held sway. With hope for walls strong enough to hold, A future bright and wide and free and bold. You swore you'd be the roof that shields the rain, But left the rafters bare, undone by pain. The walls we built to keep us safe and warm Have all begun to crack, fall out of form Windows framed to bring in morning light Now capture naught but cold and freezing night The roof was sure, a promise overhead Now leaks upon a place where love has fled Doors meant to welcome, open to the day Stand closed and barred, now that you've gone away Promises once filled these empty halls Echoes where the dust silently falls The softness of your voice now slips away Fading like the twilight before gray Wind whistles through the cracks unseen That widen in the spaces we once dreamed These rooms now hold a darkness growing deep The fire in the hearth now mine to keep Beams bow under weight that they can't bear, Empty space reminding me that you aren't there.
