Doctoral schools are very clear: No publications, no doctorate. No communication, no doctorate. The problem is training doctoral students in these practices. Several doctoral schools play the game and offer training to doctoral students from the first year. But this isn't the case everywhere, and it's clear that the quality of the training varies from one school to another. Young researchers enrolled in their first year are often at a loss: How do you publish and communicate in doctoral studies? Should you write an article and then submit it, or look for calls for papers? What is a call for papers? Where can I find one? How can I monitor calls for papers? How can I take action and submit my first abstract? These are questions all doctoral students ask themselves. But what's incredible is that most of them think they missed something in their master's program or in the first year of their thesis. Is this the case for you? Don't worry, it's not you: the training isn't available in a master's program, but it's considered a given in a doctorate. So, what do we do? To guide you and teach you the basics, I've created an article and a video that will help you acquire the most important tools to start your research career. ▬▬▬▬▬ WHO AM I? ▬▬▬▬▬▬ My name is Erika Dupont, and I earned my PhD in Contemporary Art History in 2020. Without funding for three years, I completed my dissertation with funding from the prestigious Yale University. During my studies, I faced many questions, and like most doctoral students, I received very little support throughout my entire career, and my journey was truly that of a struggle. I've always been passionate about helping doctoral students. At the beginning of my doctoral studies, I was elected to represent doctoral students on the Laboratory Councils and the doctoral school, and now I want to devote myself entirely to supporting doctoral students. Why? Because if I had been supported myself, I would have saved precious time, made fewer mistakes, fumbled less, and established myself much more quickly in the research community. I would have wasted much less energy and probably would have been earning a living much sooner. Instead, I remained in a precarious situation for years, and today, I want to help as many doctoral students as possible escape this precarious situation by giving them the skills I acquired through hard work.
