The Parthenon is considered by the Greeks to be the most beautiful monument ever built on Earth. This temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena, stands with monumental dimensions: 69.5 meters long by almost 31 meters wide, surrounded by 46 imposing columns—eight on the façade and seventeen on each side. Its artistic conception was entrusted to Phidias, advisor and protégé of Pericles, who forever marked the splendor of classical Athens. Inside, a gigantic statue of Athena, erect on its pedestal, dominated the main hall. The Parthenon is the fruit of the Greeks' unique mastery of mathematics, architecture, and engineering, and remains, more than two millennia later, an eternal symbol of the perfection and greatness of Hellenistic civilization.
