Photographed on February 22, 2026. En route to a tour of Gunma's three major plum groves, the warm weather lured us into a sudden trip to the observation deck at Nidoage Pass. Our goal was to see the spectacular view of Mount Asama covered in snow, perhaps our last of the season. From the Haruna Plum Grove area to Nidoage Pass, we rode along the pleasant mountain pass road of Prefectural Route 54 (Naganohara-Kurabuchi Line). Along the way, we discussed the origin of the name "Nidoage Pass," something that had always puzzled us. It was actually deeply connected to the Kusakaru Electric Railway, which once ran through this area. As we rode, we chatted about the history of the harsh switchbacks of the time and the story that continues to this day of Kusakaru Transportation.
