East Maitland is located on the New South Wales Main Northern Line. The Central Coast Line to Brisbane in Queensland branches off just after Maitland Railway Station. The railway station sees lots of passenger and freight trains with the local passenger train stopping 3 times per hour in both directions. A large proportion of trains passing the station is coal. You are up close and get some amazing views. The former platform to the Morpeth line that closed in 1953 takes pride of place in the station car park as well. Today you will see a few coal trains, the Pacific National steel and intermodal, New South Wales Trainlink XPT and Explorer Passenger Trains and the local Hunter Rail cars and Endeavour Rail Cars.
