Violin: S Easwaravarma Mridangam: Nanjil A R Arul Ganjira: Vishnu B Kamath This padam is one of the most popular and emotionally charged pieces in the Swathi Thirunal repertoire. It beautifully captures the nayika-nayaka bhava ( The heroine’s intense pining for her divine hero ) a theme very common in South Indian classical music and dance traditions such as Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. In this Padam, the nayika ( Heroine) sees Lord Padmanabha as her beloved hero. Restless with viraha (the sweet pain of separation), she yearns for his gentle touch. Her lord has not come to her that night, though every fibre of her being burns with longing for him. My beloved, Sri Padmanabha, who is full of noble qualities and virtues, why doesn’t he come to me immediately, joyfully and lovingly? O young and graceful one, he would come to me at night, and with joy, lovingly apply fine Kasthuri ( Fragrant musk paste ) on my forehead. Will he come singing softly to me, adorn my hair with a beautiful jasmine garland (Mulla mala), anoint my body with cooling sandal paste, share the sweet betel leaf (Tambula) with me, and lovingly enjoy my company? The radiant moon has risen in the sky and climbs ever higher. O dear friend, go swiftly to him, tell him of my sorrow and aching longing, and bring my beloved back with you, so my heart may once again know joy. --------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: These songs have been uploaded solely for listening pleasure and as an archive to preserve Carnatic music.
