T-MEC: EE.UU. impone nuevas reglas de supervisión comercial ¿resistir o adaptarse?
The US demand for an annual review of the USMCA opens the door to a transition from free trade to supervised trade with a nationalist and protectionist approach imposed on Mexico and Canada. This change marks a turning point in how trade has operated for the last three decades. Trump wants new rules of the game to control his trade deficit, protect his industry with tariffs, and secure raw materials for his supply chains, all under the guise of economic security. Uncertainty and trade sanctions would no longer be the exception, but the norm. The new system extends US dominance over the Western Hemisphere in the face of competition from China and makes Latin Americans hostages of US security policy. Faced with this scenario, Mexico faces a dilemma: resist or adapt. The consequences for Mexico are profound: the bilateral relationship would tend to align even more closely with US interests, investment could weaken due to uncertainty, and trade conflicts would become more politicized. The treaty will not survive in its current form, even if it continues until 2036 and preserves preferential treatment for its partners. This forces Mexico to rethink its long-term economic strategy, as well as its industrial and investment policies. Could Marcelo Ebrard's potential departure from the Ministry of Economy be a first sign of a new era? How will this new system affect internal economic and political equilibrium? The topic will be discussed with: José Buendía, Roberta Lajous (Diplomat and writer), Roberto Zapata (Professor at the School of Business at Universidad Panamericana and former Mexican Ambassador to the World Trade Organization), and Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez (Undersecretary of Foreign Trade).
