How to Keep Your Vegetable Garden Producing Month After Month

What if your vegetable garden could keep producing fresh food for months without the usual boom-and-bust cycle of too much all at once, followed by nothing later? In this episode of the joe gardener® show, I’m joined by longtime gardening expert and author Charlie Nardozzi to talk about his book, The Continuous Vegetable Garden: Create a Perpetual Food Garden That Sows and Grows Itself. Charlie and I discuss how to get more from the garden by planting with intention, working with nature, and making better use of the space we already have. We dig into succession planting, interplanting, self-sowing vegetables, perennial edibles, small-space fruit, and ways to keep the soil covered and alive throughout the season. Charlie shares practical examples, including planting greens between tomatoes, growing smaller successions of beans, letting lettuce and herbs reseed themselves, using perennial vegetables like asparagus, rhubarb, bunching onions, walking onions and even edible ornamentals such as daylilies and hostas. We also talk about how planting in stages can help gardeners avoid pest timing, reduce waste, and keep fresh harvests coming longer. And as always when Charlie joins me, there are plenty of simple, practical ideas you can put to work in your own garden. If you’ve ever planted too many beans, too many cabbages, or too many zucchini all at once, this conversation will help you think differently about how much you really need to grow and how to make your garden work a little smarter.
