Modern HEMP/EMP Survivability Challenges and Approaches
Today's systems are becoming more and more distributed/complex. Traditional "measurement only" approaches are introducing more risk to cost and schedule. These activities can only occur after design and build has occurred late in programs. Many measurement campaigns are logistically challenging and have hard limits due to space/access in terms of what can physically be tested/measured. In complex environments it is difficult (or impossible) to troubleshoot/fix issues in the field. HEMP/EMP survivability requires systems to be designed for resilience but also maintain that resilience throughout its operational lifetime. The industry is well aligned in the fact that for joints/seams/POEs that shielding degrades over time. This creates a difficult Hardness Maintenance and Hardness Assurance (HM/HS) problem given the physical demands of checking the performance of critical features over large areas, complex sites, limited access, and similar. The need to leverage simulation continues to grow to optimize HM/HS considerations and reduce risk earlier in programs. This webinar will discuss some of EMA's strategies in where/when to deploy simulation for HEMP/EMP survivability. These considerations include working backwards from "already built" designs/platforms as well as ways to utilize simulation in the design and development phase of programs.
