The Amazing Story in the Poem: In a scene that embodies one of the greatest instances of mental presence and quick wit in the history of literature; Abu Tammam stood reciting this poem before the prince (Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mu'tasim), and when he reached his eloquent verse: (The boldness of Amr in the generosity of Hatim... in the forbearance of Ahnaf, in the intelligence of Iyas) (2:33), some envious people interrupted him, objecting: "Do you compare the prince to the uncouth Arabs and those who are beneath him in stature?"
