In this contest, she obtained second place, losing the title to Australian Kerry Anne Wells. Upon returning from Puerto Rico, where she became the fourth Brazilian runner-up in Miss Universe, Rejane received an apotheotic reception in Porto Alegre, parading in an open car through the city streets under a shower of confetti.[3] More than a decade after her reign, she began her acting career in telenovelas on Rede Globo under the name Rejane Goulart, her married surname. In 1985, she debuted in Ti Ti Ti and in the following years participated in several others such as Felicidade (1991-92), A Viagem (1994) and Era uma vez (1998). She also acted in film, alongside Grande Otelo, in the movie Negrinho do Pastoreio. After 12 years away from television, she returned to the screen on Rede Record, a network where she played the character Larissa in the telenovela Ribeirão do xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Miss Universe 1972 was the 21st edition of Miss Universe, held on July 29, 1972 at the Cerromar Beach Hotel in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Candidates from 61 countries and territories competed for the title. One of the most politically turbulent and heavily security-heavy pageants in history, Miss Universe 1972 was the target of daily protests that forced the contestants to remain confined to their hotel during the lead-up to the pageant. In a departure from previous years, this was the first pageant to be broadcast live and in color around the world. Geopolitical tension also spilled over into the final, when, at the crucial moments of the evening, members of the Puerto Rican Independence Party managed to disconnect the cables of the cameras that were broadcasting the event live.[1] - exactly at the moment the winner was announced. The images would return when the new Miss Universe, Australian Kerry Anne Wels, was already making her first walk with the crown.[2] Until then, protocol dictated that the current crown holder had to go to the contest headquarters to crown her successor. But for the first time, this did not happen. For security reasons, Miss Universe 1971, the Lebanese Georgina Rizk, was prevented by her country's government from going to Puerto Rico, since, two months before the contest, a car bomb exploded in front of the hotel where the Miss USA contestants of that year, held on the island, were staying. In addition to this, another attack had occurred at Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel, causing the death of 22 tourists from the territory, a few months before the contest. Among the twelve semi-finalists were, besides Wells, Brazil, England, Venezuela, Israel, Germany and India, without major surprises, while the local candidate was eliminated. Wells's flawless presentation and undeniable beauty placed her among the favorites during the final presentation of the semifinalists, and five brunettes made up the Top 5: Australia, Brazil, Venezuela, England, and Israel. All five had comparable beauty, which left the contest wide open from then on. Israel, England, and Venezuela were the first three eliminated, leaving the Brazilian and the Australian in the running for the crown. Host Bob Barker then announced Rejane Goulart in second place, and after three consecutive years among the five finalists but never winning, Australia had its first Miss Universe. Rejane Goulart joined Martha Rocha, Adalgisa Colombo, and Terezinha Morango as the fourth Miss Brazil to be second place in the contest. From then on, the country would only have a truly significant result in 2007, with Natália Guimarães from Minas Gerais.[4] Kerry Anne Wells (Perth, 1952) is an Australian beauty queen, crowned Miss Universe 1972 in Dorado, Puerto Rico, on July 29 of that year. Born in East Victoria Park, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, a professional model and "weather girl" on Australian television before participating in beauty pageants,[1] she was the first representative of her country to win the universal title.
