"Viennese Children". In the summer of 1858, Empress Elisabeth secluded herself in the castle of Laxenburg. She was expecting her third child and she hoped that it would be a boy, the long-awaited succesor to the throne. During this time, her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, resided at the Vienna Imperial Palace and received numerous guests, including the Grand Duchess and the Grand Duke of Hessen-Darmstadt. An Imperial concert and dance were held on 20 June 1858 in honor of the guests. The conducting of the concert and the ball was entrusted to Josef, since his brother Johann was spending the summer in Pavlovsk. On 17 August 1858, Josef used the occasion of the celebration in the Volksgarten on the eve of Emperor Franz Josef's birthday to perform his waltz "Wiener Kinder" before the public. The work remained in the Strauss orchestra's repertoire the whole summer and was also included in the programm for the concert on 22 November 1858, at which Johann Strauss, presented his newest composition to the public in the Volksgarten. Josef Strauss was thus fully able to hold his own beside his popular brother. I've extracted the main melody of the waltz to play it in my violin but since it's difficult to find the score publicly, i decided to share it with you (in case someone wants to play it in flute, violin or instruments that can be played in treble clef) I have to mention that some parts of the waltz are in a low octave to make it easy for beginners (like me) so please enjoy it and try to play it! have fun!
