NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #56: BOTTESFORD Ladies and Gentlemen, today I present you with the 56th and final parish in North Lincolnshire. This is the town of Bottesford, which sits immediately to the South of Scunthorpe Bottesford is considered by many to be a suburb of Scunthorpe, the twoforming as they do, one contiguous urban area. However, Bottesford began its life as a village and has just kept growing It was recorded in the Domesday Book as "Budlesford", and until the 20th century it was a small farming village. You simply cannot imagine that now, because over 11,000 people live here today. Local landmarks include Bottesford Beck, which forms part of a linear park, and Bottesford Preceptory where it is said that the Knight's Templar and later Knights of St John made a base. We’ll see something related to that – allegedly if nothing else - on this very route. Bottesford also has a church, dedicated to St Peter, and a local football club – Bottesford Town There’s a whole host of shops, several pubs, and at least four schools – one of which is Frederick Gough School which some of my older viewers may remember as Ashby Grammar School In short, Bottesford covers a lot of ground and has plenty of things we can get our teeth into. It’s much more than just one of those place commuters pass through.
