Wee Waor Alphonse Tuinstra
Wee Waor Alphonse Tuinstra When we think of the culture of Limburg and the city of Maastricht, we immediately think of the language. The language that is not just spoken there, but lived there. Today I want to take you into the life story of a man who poured his heart and soul into that language. A man who was known as Alphonse Marie Hubert Tuinstra, but who was simply called Fons Tuinstra by everyone. Fons Tuinstra was a teacher, author, and dialectician. But above all, he was the guardian of 'Mestreechs'. He captured the soul of the city on paper at a time when the world around him was changing rapidly. [His early years and the love for education — Speed up a bit] Let's go back to the beginning. Fons was born on June 26, 1897, in Maastricht. He grew up in a dynamic period. The transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century brought industrialization and change. But within the city walls of Maastricht, local culture remained rock-solid. Fons chose education. He became a teacher. It was precisely in that role as a teacher that he understood how important language is for the identity of a child and a community. While Standard Dutch was the norm in schools, Tuinstra never lost sight of his love for the region's mother tongue.[The Second World War and the historic encounter — Powerful storytelling] One of the most special and historic moments in Fons Tuinstra's life took place shortly after the liberation of the south of the Netherlands. The year is March 1945. The Netherlands north of the rivers was still occupied and suffering under the Hunger Winter. Queen Wilhelmina returned to Dutch soil for the first time after years of exile in London. She visited liberated Limburg. During this emotional and constitutionally crucial visit, a special encounter took place. Fons Tuinstra stood there face to face with the Queen. Flanked by Governor Willem van Sonsbeeck and Maastricht Mayor Michiels van Kessenich, Tuinstra represented the voice of the Limburg people. It was a moment that symbolized the resilience of the region. It showed that Tuinstra was not just a writer on the margins. He was a respected figurehead of local culture. [His literary legacy — Speak with admiration] What did Fons Tuinstra leave us on paper? His work for the Digital Library for Dutch Literature and various anthologies is of inestimable value to dialect literature. In 1943, he published his famous text with the striking title: ‘Alphonse, Marie, Hubert Tuinstra (1897 - God wèt wienie)’. A title full of Limburg humor and a sense of perspective. But he also wrote about the core of his passion in essays such as ‘De stêrke Maastrichts’ and about daily life in ‘Mêrretdaag’. His prose and poetry, such as the beautiful ‘Begienestraot-impressie’, remind us of a Maastricht that has partly disappeared, but always continues to exist through his words. He did not write with the distance of a scientist. He wrote with the warmth of an insider. [Conclusion — Slowing down and finishing with impact] On July 21, 1971, Fons Tuinstra passed away in Geulle, Limburg, at the age of 74. He left behind a region that was deeply indebted to his efforts to preserve the language. Ladies and gentlemen, language is more than a set of grammatical rules for communication. Language is culture, language is emotion, language is history. Fons Tuinstra understood that like no other. Through his work as a teacher and his sharp pen as an author, he ensured that the Maastricht dialect received the recognition it deserved. As we enjoy the rich Limburg culture today, we commemorate men like Alphonse Tuinstra. The man who knew that you only truly know where you are going, when you speak the language of the land you come from. Thank you for your attention. http://www.visionfotos.nl
