Hot Water Bandits

The plaintiff says she purchased a two-family home and rented the first floor to the defendants. She claims they spliced pipes to divert hot water, stole electricity, failed to pay rent on time and were eventually evicted. She is suing for back rent. The defendants, a husband and wife, say the husband performed maintenance work on the home and, in exchange, was instructed to connect the first floor unit to the second floor hot water system.
