During World War II, Johan Mohr was one of the most effective commanders of German submarines. He was born on June 12, 1916, in Hanover, and began his naval service at the age of eighteen, joining the Reichsmarine in 1934. He initially served on surface vessels, and after a few years was transferred to the submarine fleet. Mohr was said to be one of the few U-boat commanders who served on the same U-boat throughout their entire U-boat service during World War II. In this case, it was said to be the U-124. This vessel was a Type IXB, a large U-boat designed for long-distance ocean patrols. Her keel was laid on August 11, 1939, at the AG Weser shipyard in Bremen. After more than six months of intensive work, the vessel was launched on March 9, 1940, and commissioned into the Kriegsmarine just over three months later, on June 11. The ship had a relatively large displacement, which was 1,051 tons surfaced, increasing to 1,178 tons submerged. Her length was 76.5 meters, while her beam was almost seven meters. The ship could reach a surface speed of over eighteen knots, and her armament consisted of one 105-millimeter gun, two 37- and 20-millimeter anti-aircraft guns, and six 533-millimeter torpedo tubes, four in the bow and two in the stern. The first commander of this ship was Captain-Leutnant George-Wilhelm Schulz, and under the command of this already experienced, 34-year-old Kriegsmarine officer, Mohr completed his first three combat patrols, serving as watch officer. However, on September 7, 1941, Schulz relinquished command of the ship, simultaneously assuming command of the 6th U-boat Flotilla stationed in Gdańsk. The next day, Johan Mohr became the new commander of U-124… He was thus given command of the only submarine of his service during World War II, at the helm of which the then 25-year-old would soon prove his extraordinary skills…
