The Russian occupation of Trebizond occurred during World War I, after the Trebizond Campaign, resulting in its capture from the Ottomans on April 18, 1916 by the Russian forces until the eventual Russian withdrawal after the Bolshevik uprising, with control shifting back to Turkey by 1918. With the Russian army entering the city the Greek and the remaining Armenian population (500 at the time of the 30.000 before the genocide) rejoiced as they saw the Russian army as liberators because of their common Christian Orthodox faith. In the last pictures are Greeks of Trebizond welcoming the Russian army in front of the Opera of Trebizond and the Trebizond Mayor Ioannis Triftanidis with the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan bishop Chrysanthos welcoming Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich who entered the city with the Russian Caucasus Army. • The guerrillas of Sanda mentioned in the song are guerrillas groups from the Pontic Greek village of Sanda who went to the mountains and started guerrilla warfare against the Ottomans(like Pontic Greeks from other places) because of the ongoing genocide the Turks had already started with the beginning of World War I.
