Write to us at: [email protected] Our hero today: Edmund Kochanowski (born 1934 in Zbydniów), his father worked at the Horodyński estate in Zbydniów near Stalowa Wola. On the night of June 24-25, 1943, he witnessed the brutal murder of the Horodyński family and their guests, who were enjoying a wedding reception there that day. The crime was committed by a German Waffen SS unit from the Dirlewanger Brigade, commissioned by Martin Fuldner, the occupational administrator of the Charzewice estate. Edmund Kochanowski recounts seeing burning buildings and hearing gunfire, and describes his father's return home, which miraculously survived the massacre. He also recalls the fate of two young Horodyńskis, who managed to escape to Warsaw but perished in the Warsaw Uprising. Edmund Kochanowski witnessed the Germans burying the murdered and erasing traces of the crime. Only in 1950 did a ceremonial funeral for the 19 victims of the Zbydniów massacre take place, attended by Edmund. The story also details the Poles' retaliation – the Home Army issued a death sentence against Martin Fuldner, which was carried out.
