In this episode, I travel to 勐腊县, the southernmost border county in Yunnan, where China meets Laos and Myanmar. This remote tropical region is home to the Dai ethnic minority and one of the most surreal New Year celebrations in Asia. Tonight is the Dai New Year Festival 1388 (2026), and the entire town transforms into a dreamlike world. Tens of thousands of sky lanterns and floating flower lanterns light up the night sky as locals celebrate with ancient traditions, Buddhist culture, and nonstop festival energy. This doesn’t feel like the China most people imagine.
