You can dig your own well using PVC pipe and power tools! This is a low-cost, efficient, and one-person DIY weekend method for digging a well and accessing groundwater. The groundwater level came up after about 2.0 meters, but the water coming from the shallower layer contained a lot of waste, and pumping would cause the water level to drop, resulting in a shortage. Therefore, I decided to continue digging until I was satisfied with the water quality and quantity. A layer of sand and gravel rich in kana (with pebbles up to 20mm in size) and a brown clay layer continued for 5m, then changed to a hard gray clay layer containing lignite, which gradually became finer sand and finally, at 7m, changed to gray beach-like sand. We reached the next clay layer and stopped digging at 8.1m, where it became difficult to dig any further. [How much did it cost?] The main cost was 10,000 yen for the PVC pipe, and the hand pump, purchased on Rakuten, cost about 9,800 yen. I later purchased and imported an electric shallow well pump from Indonesia for about 12,000 yen and installed it in the garden. So, while I'll probably have to make multiple trips to the hardware store as needed and make small expenditures, I think I could build one myself for a total of 30,000 yen. [What motivated me to dig a well?] The Heisei era was a time of disasters. When the Kumamoto earthquake occurred in 2016, I witnessed the distress many people felt when their water supply was cut off. Although drinking water was readily available thanks to water trucks, many residents were unable to use the bath or toilet, which required large amounts of water, and suffered greatly. "This must not happen. So I decided to dig a well at my home so that water would not be cut off in the event of an emergency!" This was the thought that led me to dig a well at my home. Currently, I use it not only to water my garden, but also as a local disaster prevention well. [What about the water quality?] The water quality was subsequently tested by the local public health center, and although it was slightly high in scum, it was almost bacteria-free and appears to be safe for use for purposes other than drinking. The well has also been certified as a disaster prevention well by the city of Nagoya. The well water temperature is approximately 17°C in both summer and winter. Currently, I use it exclusively for watering my garden and playing in the water.
