A Bollywood film has triggered a diplomatic storm — and this time, the backlash is coming straight from Beijing. The teaser of Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan, based on the deadly June 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh, has drawn sharp criticism from Chinese state media. Beijing has accused the film of exaggeration, distorting facts, and promoting Indian nationalism. The film portrays Colonel Santosh Babu of the 16 Bihar Regiment, who was killed while leading Indian soldiers during the Galwan Valley confrontation — the first fatal border clash between India and China in over four decades. The clash involved brutal hand-to-hand combat at high altitude, with no firearms used due to existing border agreements. While India acknowledged the loss of 20 soldiers, China initially denied casualties and later claimed just four deaths — figures disputed by many global experts. China’s state-run Global Times has dismissed the film as emotional propaganda, questioned Colonel Babu’s role, and even claimed Galwan Valley lies on China’s side of the Line of Actual Control — a claim rejected by India. New Delhi has responded by stating that films are creative expressions, not instruments of foreign policy, and that India’s official positions are articulated through diplomacy and the military — not cinema.
