He touches upon topics such as Endovenous Laser Treatment, RFA and Sclerotherapy, the knowledge of which will help you with questions like how to get rid of varicose veins in your legs, how can I permanently cure varicose veins and what is the best treatment for varicose veins. Dr. Shashidar KP is an expert in Vascular and Endovascular surgery. EVLT: EVLT or Endovenous Laser Treatment, is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat varicose veins. It uses laser energy to heat and close off the affected vein, causing it to shrink and eventually disappear. During the procedure, a small catheter is inserted into the affected vein, and a laser fiber is then passed through the catheter. The laser energy is then directed at the wall of the affected vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. EVLT is often performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes less than an hour to complete. RFA: RFA stands for Radiofrequency Ablation, which is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins. It involves the use of radiofrequency waves to heat and close off the affected vein, causing it to shrink and eventually disappear. During the procedure, a small catheter is inserted into the affected vein, and a radiofrequency electrode is then passed through the catheter. The electrode is then activated, delivering radiofrequency energy to the wall of the affected vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. RFA is often performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes less than an hour to complete. Sclerotherapy: Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. It involves injecting a special solution, called a sclerosant, into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and eventually fade. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and does not require anesthesia. During the procedure, the sclerosant solution is injected directly into the affected vein using a very fine needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to become inflamed and eventually collapse. Over time, the collapsed vein is absorbed by the body and replaced with healthy tissue. POST SURGERY CARE Once the vein is treated, the sheath and the laser are removed from the patient. The symptoms are relieved almost immediately. However, to make this relief lasting and permanent, doctors advise the patients on how to manage themselves after EVLT. It includes: Wearing compression stockings for upto 2 weeks after the surgery. The motive behind this is to create a pressure which will assist the leg veins to push the blood up, thus preventing a venous disorder to occur again. To reduce the pain, painkillers will be prescribed. There will be swelling seen on the treated site after the surgery. It is recommended to keep an ice pack on the site for a day or two after the surgery to reduce the swelling.
