FRED Talks | Michelle Alexander Speaks on Reimagining our Legal, Political, and Economic Systems
"May the sleeping giant wake" Michelle Alexander is a highly acclaimed civil rights lawyer, advocate, and legal scholar. As the award-winning author of the bestselling book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, Alexander’s work helped serve as a catalyst for Race Forward’s Mass Freedom project and the inception of FRED Talks. In recent years, she has taught at a number of universities, including Stanford Law School, where she was an associate professor of law and directed the Civil Rights Clinics. FRED (Facing Race, Elevating Democracy) Talks is part of Race Forward’s Mass Freedom project. Mass Freedom seeks to bridge movements to end systems of mass criminalization by 1) elevating the experiences of those who have been most directly affected by these systems, and by 2) empowering communities of color to unite amidst a political landscape that grows more threatening with each day.
