In the year 1219, a small band of crusaders led by the knight Godfrey de Montfort found themselves cut off from the main forces after a failed siege of Damietta. Retreating through Persian lands, they sought a way back to the Kingdom of Jerusalem, but the desert between Isfahan and Shushan had an encounter in store for them that would forever change the survivors' perception of the boundaries between the world of men and what lies beyond. Of the twenty-three warriors who entered the sands, only four saw Christian lands again.
