[4K] Alton Towers Monorail, join us for a trip on the Monorail from the Hotel Car Park Station to the Towers Street Station from the clear window carriage as we take in some of the iconic Alton Towers attractions along the route. The Alton Towers monorail opened in the summer of 1987 to carry passengers from the car parks to the newly created Towers Street entrance which opened the previous year. Prior to the Monorail's opening, guests either had to walk or use a shuttle bus. A grand ceremony was held on the 13th of August 1987 with an official opening by actor William Shatner. The Star Trek actor was chosen due to the space theming of the trains with each one being named after a planet in the solar system. The Monorail was manufactured by Von Roll Holding and it started life at the Expo 86 World's Fair in Vancouver, Canada. It was then shipped to Alton Towers when the Expo ended. The Monorail Trains were beginning to look a little dated by 2008 and Alton Towers decided to refurbish the Monorail Trains giving each train a new and unique theme designed by Sarner. The monorail train themes include Splash Landings, Mutiny Bay, Explorer, Moo-norail, Celebration, Jelly Bean, Strawberry, and Fish Bowl. While the theming looks fantastic from the outside as the Monorail passes by, it distorts the view from inside the monorail train, but you can find a seat without the theming on the windows which is where this video was filmed from. The monorail train passes by rides and attractions such as Galactica, Nemesis Reborn, and the Curse of Alton Manor How long does the Alton Towers Monorail take? We timed the monorail at around 4 minutes and 45 seconds from setting off from Towers Street Station and arriving at the Car Park Station. There is queuing and boarding time to add to this which this will vary depending on how busy the park is and the occasional stop approaching the station if another Monorail train is yet to leave. Is the Alton Towers Monorail free? The monorail is free of charge and runs from 9am till an hour after closing, subject to availability. Queues appear long but move very quickly, although at peak times, i.e. park opening/closing the wait can be around 40 minutes other times are usually walk-on. How long does walking from the Car Parks and Hotel to the Alton Towers Entrance take? The walking time varies depending on which car park you park in, it takes around 10-25 minutes. A rough guide is Car Park A, B, C is 10 -15 minutes, Car Park D, E, F, G, H is 18 - 22 minutes and Car Park J, K is 25 minutes.
