SSTP Case study: Transforming potato production in Tanzania’s south growth corridor

Production costs reduced for Irish potato farmers following an increase in the supply of clean seed Scaling Seeds and Technologies Partnership (SSTP) for Africa is a partnership between USAID and AGRA with governments, local seed companies, farmer and development organizations to overcome the challenges that restrict farmer access to improved agricultural technologies. SSTP is present in six countries – Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal and Tanzania where it works with national governments to meet specific policy and commercialization commitments. In Tanzania, the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) is a public- private partnership focussed on improving agricultural productivity, food security and livelihoods in Tanzania. SSTP has partnered with SAGCOT and Mtanga Farms to increase the supply and distribution of clean seed for four improved varieties of Irish potato. The target is to raise annual seed production by 200 MT and reach 11,400 farmers.
