Feast or Famine! Is Metal Detecting All Luck or Pure Skill?

After one of the best runs of finds I've ever had, reality finally caught up with me! Have you ever had one of those days where history seems to be pouring out of the ground, only to be followed by a day where you're struggling to find a single decent signal? That's metal detecting in the UK – the ultimate game of feast or famine! Over the last few months I've been incredibly fortunate, uncovering some amazing pieces of history including numerous hammered coins, a rare Henry I coin, three gold rings (one Medieval), a silver Roman denarius, a Celtic silver unit, and a variety of Roman artefacts. But all good things come to an end... at least for now. My "Field of Dreams" is now full of crops, meaning I won't be able to detect there again for several months. Thankfully I still have plenty of pasture to explore, although the finds are proving much harder to come by! My Dorset weekend proved very frustrating with only one decent find. Skill or luck? That's the beauty of this hobby though. Every signal could be the next bucket-lister, and stories like the recent discovery of three gold torcs near Carlisle keep the dream alive and the excitement levels high. Will today's hunt deliver another piece of history, or will it be one of those challenging days we all know too well?
