Venezuela could go to war over a piece of the map! Watch out for the new DLC. First, let me tell you a bit about the server's lore. We're in the Venezuelan zone. This country gained independence from Spain in 1811. The Dutch had a base nearby, but after Napoleon's invasion of Europe, the British took over the area. In other words, they created British Guiana. Venezuela at that time said: look, now that we have you as neighbors… let's make things clear, the border is the Essequibo River. To the left, Venezuela; to the right, your tourist zone. Things went well, but over the years, the British took advantage of the fact that Venezuela didn't have many people near the river and was still recovering from the War of Independence… and they began to establish settlers in the area that wasn't theirs. Furthermore, the United Kingdom soon claimed that the river wasn't valid, that their border was further west. Venezuela obviously said not to freak out and they started arguing. Then the United States arrived and said: "Okay, okay... both of you be quiet, let's have an arbitration to see who's right." So in 1899 a tribunal was set up in Washington where the British and the Americans sat, and as president was an impartial judge, who was a Russian who taught at several British universities. But wait, what about Venezuela? Didn't it participate or what? Well, nope, they weren't allowed; the United States spoke for them. And guess what they ruled... well, you guessed it! After 6 days of the 3 months the event could last... they said that the United Kingdom was right, so bam... a good part of the territory was going to British Guiana, which suddenly tripled in size. Venezuela was quite shocked and continued complaining… but nobody paid much attention. In 1962, they took the matter to the UN, alleging that the previous tribunal had not been impartial… and the UN replied that they would look into it. Four years later, Guyana became independent, acknowledging that there was a problem with Venezuela that needed to be resolved. Years passed, and the UN acted like the UN, which is to say, nothing. In 2018, they said they were exhausted from working so hard, so Venezuela asked the International Court of Justice to do something. The Court began investigating and in 2023 declared that Venezuela was wrong and that the territory belonged to Guyana. Oh yeah? We'll see about that. The Maduro government decided to hold a referendum to consult the population on what to do to seize their beloved territory of Guayana Esequiba, which they consider theirs. This referendum, to be held on December 3rd, will have five questions. The last one is the most critical because it asks if they would be interested in making a plan for that piece of the map to become part of Venezuela. Some experts say that this referendum is just a distraction tactic by the Venezuelan president to try to extend his term by getting involved in a war, since he could be defeated by the opposition in next year's elections.
