Bishop Joseph Maria Pham Nang Tinh (1917–1974) – the first Bishop of the Bui Chu Diocese – lived his entire life in sacrifice, faithfulness, and love for his flock. Born in Quan Cong village, Nam Dinh province, he grew up in a devout family and dedicated his life to God early on. On August 4, 1945, amidst the historical days of the nation, Father Pham Nang Tinh was ordained a priest. On March 5, 1960, he was officially appointed by the Holy See as Apostolic Vicar of Bui Chu, and then became the first Bishop of the diocese on November 24, 1960. In the context of the many difficulties in North Vietnam after the 1954 Geneva Accords, with only thirty-five elderly and frail priests remaining, he replaced them through his quiet presence. The image of the old bicycle rolling along the mist-shrouded dikes has become an unforgettable one – a close Bishop, accompanying and leading his flock. He left behind a spiritual legacy: The spirituality of the Sacred Heart and the Blessed Virgin Mary: Consecrating the diocese to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1962. Personnel training: Ordaining dozens of priests, laying the foundation for the diocese's revival. Establishing the Congregation of the Virgin Mary (1969): sowing the seeds of religious life amidst times of hardship and scarcity. On February 11, 1974, he passed away at the age of fifty-seven, leaving behind immeasurable sorrow for over fifty thousand parishioners of Bui Chu at his funeral.
