Melvin Tan, Adrian Lai & Wong Ker How: "When Is Enough, Enough?" - Venice Biennale 2023

Titled "When is Enough, Enough? The Performance of Measurement," the Singapore Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale challenges conventional architectural metrics by showcasing a Values Measurement Machine understanding architectural experience at its core. Architecture critic Gokhan Karakus speaks with curators Melvin Tan, Adrian Lai, and Wong Ker How on how the Singapore Pavilion responds to this year's Biennale theme "The Laboratory of the Future," by curator Lesley Lokko which urges architects to be agents of change. The machine, an analogue plotter, captures visitor responses to inquiries about intangible urban qualities like agency, freedom, and inclusion, on towering calligraphic scrolls. Through this exhibition experience, the Singapore National Pavilion curatorial team aims to bridge architectural standards and community needs, redefining design innovation.
