Novosibirsk is the largest city in Siberia and the third largest in Russia. It is famous for its constructivist architecture and unusual museums dedicated to happiness or the sun. The city is called "fast-paced" and "unstoppably rushing forward," as it was built on a grand scale. One striking example of this is the 2-kilometer-long metro bridge. Even the Opera and Ballet Theater, nicknamed the Siberian Coliseum, captivates with its scale. This complex structure boasts amazing acoustics, night vision cameras, and an unconventional dome roofing technology. Novosibirsk is ready to surprise with more than just its dynamism. Amusing monuments to sausage, a traffic light, and a businesswoman speak to the city's residents' sense of humor and originality. Learn more about the city's history at the local history museum, which houses religious and everyday artifacts from the peoples of Siberia. The first settlements in the area began to emerge in the 16th century, when Russians began to settle the region. At the beginning of the 18th century, various villages existed on the site of today's Novosibirsk: Krivoshchekovo, Erestnaya, Bugrinskaya, and Yeltsovskaya. At the end of the 18th century, they were united into the Krivoshchekovo Volost. By the 19th century, it included 37 villages. Later, the population increased significantly due to emigration beyond the Urals. The construction of the railway, initiated by Emperor Alexander III, changed the life of many settlements. The route was intended to connect Chelyabinsk and Vladivostok, but the Cabinet of Ministers of the Russian Empire decided to build the railway across the Ob River, near the settlement of Krivoshchekovo. In 1983, a horse-drawn train and a detachment of bridge builders arrived on the site. This is where the history of Novosibirsk begins. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the first stone buildings in the city. 1899 The emergence of Novonikolaevsk, as the city was initially called, coincided with industrialization. Its importance as a transportation hub grew, which positively impacted the town's prosperity. Soon, shipping began to develop on the Ob River. The town neither mined nor processed raw materials. Novonikolaevsk's development focused on three areas: transportation, communications, and trade. The town became the cooperative capital of Russia. Among its active public figures were enterprising individuals from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Warsaw. Some of this active force included people from other countries: Great Britain, Finland, and China. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the flour milling industry began to develop. It was one of the most influential sectors of the city. The period after the Revolution and before the start of World War II is considered a distinct period in Novosibirsk's history. The city underwent active industrialization, the first airfield was built, and the first university was opened. Novosibirsk assumed administrative and managerial functions, becoming the county seat. Around 35,000 people died here during the war. The city soon developed into a major industrial center. However, in recent years, the share of employment in industry has declined and shifted to trade. Today's metropolis is characterized by its "Siberian" scale. The main street, Krasny Prospekt, is straight and stretches for 7 kilometers. It takes two hours to walk it, so Novosibirsk is a fascinating place to explore. Along the way, you'll encounter curious monuments that make you want to linger. In the center, at the intersection of Sibrevkoma and Serebrennikovskaya Streets, you're sure to see a composition of a frozen traffic cop standing next to a slender traffic light. This amusing pairing is reminiscent of the distant 1940s. It was here that one of the city's first traffic lights was installed. It was manually operated, but was necessary due to the nearby school. However, locals have their own names for this landmark: "Traffic Cop Monument" or "Policeman." Novosibirsk celebrates women's self-realization—a fact eloquently demonstrated by the sculpture popularly nicknamed "The Careerist Monument." It stands on a quiet street called Michurin Street. The sculpture of a businesswoman was installed by a local printing company. The figure has a slight smile and gazes out over the city. Today's metropolis boasts a Siberian-style grandeur.
