This M57 Swap Should Be Brilliant. So Why Isn't It?

On paper, this should be a brilliant swap. A BMW M57 diesel in a Land Rover Defender ticks all the boxes — torque, reliability, drivability. So why isn’t this one? This Defender came to me after being converted elsewhere. The core of the swap is actually good — decent parts, sensible decisions — but it’s been finished badly, and that’s made it unreliable. In this video, I go through: • What’s been done right on this M57 swap • What’s been done wrong (and why those details matter) • How poor finishing leads to breakdowns, leaks, and lost confidence • My honest thoughts on the BMW M57 as an engine swap choice This isn’t a rant, and it’s not an M57 problem. It’s a lesson in why “it runs” doesn’t mean “it’s finished”. In Part 2, we’ll fix the details properly — drivetrain upgrades, intake work, proper mounting — and finally drive it to see what this swap should have been from the start. 👇 Let me know in the comments: Would you choose an M57 for a Defender swap — and what do you think makes or breaks a conversion? 🔧 Follow along on Instagram: Business: @bespoke_performance_eng Personal: @scott_nagle
