We Finally Started Building Our Traditional Oak Frame Garage | Episode 1
For this week's episode of My Tiny Estate, we're embarking on one of the most exciting projects we've ever undertaken here at the Dower House... and it all begins with a hole in the ground. But before the diggers arrive, we wanted to share something we've been thinking about a lot recently: how to make living in a large historic home more sustainable and affordable in the long term. Like many families, rising energy costs have forced us to rethink how we use and improve our home. Dean sits down to talk honestly about the reality of our electricity bills and the small but meaningful steps we're taking to reduce them — from introducing battery storage to exploring the potential of solar energy. Restoring an old house isn't just about preserving its beauty; it's about finding ways to help it thrive for generations to come. Then comes the part we've been waiting for... After months of planning, designing and dreaming, work officially begins on our traditional oak frame garage. This is a project that will not only transform the estate practically, but also restore a sense of historic balance to the setting of the house. Borja talks through the plans, explains why we've chosen to invest in this build, and shares the many ways it will improve family life here at My Tiny Estate. Of course, no episode would be complete without a little gardening. During one of Otto's very early morning bottle feeds (at around 3am!), Borja may have accidentally ordered hundreds of tiny lavender plug plants. In true My Tiny Estate fashion, we spend some quiet moments potting them on in the hope that, by the end of summer, they'll become part of the wider landscape plans for the estate. Then, the real excitement begins. From the first dig of the foundations to the concrete finally being poured, we document every stage of this incredible milestone. Seeing plans on paper turn into something tangible is a feeling that's difficult to put into words — and we're so grateful to be sharing the experience with all of you. And if that wasn't enough... Borja reveals where he's heading next week for what promises to be another unforgettable chapter in our journey. If you've ever dreamed of restoring an old home, building something meaningful from the ground up, or simply enjoy following the everyday realities of family life on a tiny estate, we hope you'll join us for this next adventure.
