Arietta: Adagio Molto Semplice E Cantabile (11:05:44) - Piano : Claudio Arrau Recorded in 1962-1966 New Mastering in 2017 by AB for CMRR CLAUDIO ARRAU: The Encyclopedist of the Piano Claudio Arrau was born on February 6, 1903, in Chillán, Chile. He was just five years old when he gave his first public performance in his hometown. By the age of eleven, he was already performing in Berlin. In the years that followed, Arrau became a "child of Chile," a shining example of talent so brilliant in the eyes of his fellow countrymen that he was awarded a long-term state scholarship — not from a music school or conservatory, but uniquely, by the Chilean Parliament itself. Like a musical ambassador in short trousers, the young boy was sent to Europe to pursue piano instruction and higher education. Arrau became (as he still remains) a European pianist, although even today, promoters and audiences often expect and assume that young pianists from South America will make their way in Europe by performing works by Spanish composers. Instead, there was Johann Sebastian Bach. During twelve concerts given in 1935–1936 at Berlin’s Meistersaal, Arrau performed nearly the entire cycle of keyboard music by the great master, creating a sensation with a tour de force of musicality, pianistic concentration, and polyphonic clarity. The small and intimate Meistersaal, seating about 500 people, was the preferred venue in Berlin for emerging artists and adventurous programs, and had a loyal and devoted audience. It was there that Arrau made his first musical breakthrough with his Bach cycle. It was during his formative years in Berlin that Arrau laid the foundations of a repertoire of astonishing breadth — one that would previously have required the combination of several different talents and artistic personalities to cover the same scope. Did Backhaus have the same command of Debussy as he did of Beethoven? Or Edwin Fischer, of Liszt and Brahms? Only Arrau was fully equipped to interpret the entire range of piano music at the highest artistic level — in this, he remains unmatched. Avoiding mere instrumental glamour, Arrau strove to be an uncompromising musician, striking a blow for truth with the subtlest of touches — if one can speak of “striking blows” when it comes to piano playing, which is certainly not the case with Arrau. He insisted on fidelity to the score, on intellectual and thus stylistic integrity. Without hiding the light of his art under a bushel, he became a master of musical illumination — a true encyclopedist of the piano.
