Chevy Bolt EV: Real-World Efficiency at 70 to 75 MPH
People have been asking for more data on the Bolt EV's 75 mph efficiency, especially after I commented that Bjorn Nyland's Ampera-E efficiency of 2.9 to 3 mi/kWh at 75 mph was low based on my own experiences. This video is from one of my recent trips. It is an ~84 mile run at 70-75 mph cruising speeds. Net elevation change was +40 feet. Climate control was set at 72 F with outside temperatures between 90 and 95 F, and took close to 5% of the total energy. The winds turned out to be very calm. This is also my first run on the new Michelin Energy Saver AS tires, which had less than 100 miles on them at the start of the trip (new tread can affect efficiency: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete.... Final efficiency, including climate control usage, was 3.3 mi/kWh, or roughly 10% more efficient than the Ampera-E as tested by Bjorn at the same speeds. This is simply a real-world data point, and I do not mean it to be a replacement for rigorous efficiency testing. However, it does align with my previous experiences of ~3.5 mi/kWh consumption at 75 mph at 70 F without climate control usage. Depending on feedback, I might or might not take the time to do actual, rigorous efficiency at various speeds.
