The winter gusted often and lifted clouds of snow, which obscured their vision and shortened their ability to see to only a few yards. Consuming food kept their spirits up and warmed their bodies, chasing away the chill until the next gust of wind. Like a harbinger of things to come, a particularly strong wind blew across the bay, whipping the snow into a cloud and blinding their view. As the wind died down and the snow settled, a ghostly shape emerged from the cloud, headed directly for the group. A few facts about polar bears will convey the predicament the fishermen found themselves in. Polar bears are designed to swim in icy Arctic waters with a dense layer of fur surrounding a thick layer of buoyant blubber. They are not efficient running across land or ice, as the insulating layer of blubber and fur preserves body heat, preventing them from cooling off, even over a short pursuit. They are not the slowest bear in the bear family, but aren't the fastest either, but do have the most powerful bite force of all bears to make them effective killers. Now, anglers were familiar with polar bears, and this bear clearly meant business. His head was high as if tracking by sight. Its ears stood upright, listening for any sound they could pick up. The fishing party immediately reacted, waving their arms and shouting at the bear, hoping it was confused as to what they were. The bear didn’t even slow down as it galloped toward them, hell-bent on running them down and perhaps killing them.
