Dixie Square Mall - Minecraft

Dixie Square Mall lived a brief life of twelve years, lasting from 1966 to 1978. The first part of Dixie Square Mall to open was a Montgomery Ward store, which opened in late 1965. It is by the main entrance, seen at the beginning of the video. The official grand opening of the mall was on November 9, 1966. Special events were held to attract people to the building, including concerts, and giveaways. Dixie Square was anchored by JCPenney, and Montgomery Ward, and had larger stores like Walgreen's, and a Jewel grocery store. In 1970, a Turn Style store was added to the building. However, the mall began to suffer by the later 1960's. Other malls in the area opened, which challenged Dixie Square. Things went downhill from there. Violent crimes happened in the early 1970's. Stores basically lined up at the doors to leave. By 1978, the mall was no longer able to sustain itself. It was shuttered, but not for good. Shortly after it closed, a school used some of the mall while their new building was under construction. A scene of a Blues Brothers film was also filmed in this building. The scene featured the Blues Brothers being chased by the police in a car chase. After filming finished, the mall was a mess. By the 1980's, the mall was an even larger mess. Vandals broke in and stole and broke what was still useful in the building. Plans were made to redevelop, but the city of Harvey ran out of funding. Flash forward to the 2000's. The Ward's anchor store was demolished illegally in late 2005. This led to legal complications, because materials from the building later tested positive for asbestos. The mall sat wide open, so any person could wander in. In early 2012, the last remains of the building were demolished, as the city of Harvey had more funds to do so. The land that the mall was on is still unused today, now being taken over by weeds and shrubs.
