Lecture by Bartosz Popczyński as part of the Encounters with Nature series [June 23, 2026] On Father's Day, we take a look at fathers in the animal world. Contrary to popular belief, nature is full of males who are incredibly dedicated to caring for their offspring: guarding eggs, building and protecting nests, feeding the young, keeping them warm, teaching them independence, defending them from predators, and sometimes taking on almost all responsibility for raising them. Bartosz Popczyński guides us through various habitats and groups of animals—from fish and insects, through amphibians and birds, to mammals. The lecture features, among others, Sticklebacks, sticklebacks, gobies, seahorses, snailfish, Darwin's frogs, emperor penguins, dotterels, kiwis, pygmy owls, swans, black woodpeckers, cassowaries, emus, Baikal hamsters, foxes, wolves, pygmy marmosets, and gorillas. This is a story about surprising parenting strategies: fish fanning their eggs to provide them with oxygen; a male seahorse in whose midst the offspring develop; amphibians carrying eggs on their bodies or storing them in resonance sacs; emperor penguins incubating eggs for weeks in extreme conditions; and birds and mammals teaching their young how to forage, live in groups, and avoid threats. The lecture demonstrates that fatherhood in the animal world can mean struggle, patience, sacrifice, vigilance, and care—and sometimes even a complete reversal of the roles we typically assign to mothers and fathers. Bartosz Popczyński is a forester and nature educator associated with the Center for Nature and Forest Education of the Urban Forests in Warsaw.
