Salima Naji | Conférence

Committed to numerous projects protecting oasis heritage, Salima Naji founded her agency in Morocco in 2004. She offers a constructive alternative that prioritizes raw and bio-based materials in an environmentally responsible approach to innovation. To date, Naji has built around thirty bioclimatic buildings in earth or stone in southern Morocco and has contributed to the evolution of Moroccan urban planning regulations towards the progressive use of raw earth. As an anthropologist, she has dedicated numerous works to the built heritage of southern Morocco, focusing on its intangible and profoundly societal dimension. Her practice is complemented by her scientific work in numerous international action-research programs that explore sustainability and the relationship between societies and their environment. Salima Naji was awarded the EDF Foundation's "Young Architects" grant in 2004, and her work has received numerous accolades, including two shortlistings for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2022 and 2013 cycles). A Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (2017), she has published extensively on architecture, including Collective Granaries of the Atlas (Edisud, 2006), The Ksar of Assa: Safeguarding a Port in Saharan Morocco (DTG, 2013), and Architectures of the Common Good: Towards an Ethics of Preservation (MētisPresses, 2019).
